Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Below are responses to the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for piano lessons in Huntington Beach:

What makes Samara Rice Music different? Samara Rice Music teaches engaging and play-based piano lessons specifically designed for students ages 5-18.  A wide variety of music games, books, technology, and materials are utilized to tailor lessons to the student’s exact interest and needs. Samara continuously improves her teaching though exploring the most innovative lesson and supplemental book series, attending workshops, and maintaining memberships with local and national professional music organizations.

At what age can my child start lessons? Most children are ready for  traditional private piano lessons around 5 or 6 years old. A good indicator is if a child knows their ABC’s and can focus for 20-30 minutes.

Do we need to own a piano? Students taking private piano lessons should own a piano or 88-weighted-key digital piano to practice at home. Recommended (keyboards) digital pianos are the Yamaha P-series or the Casio Privia series. If you already own a piano but it need a tuning, a list of local piano tuners is available on the Current Students page.

Do students have the opportunity to perform? Yes! Every October students have the opportunity to perform in costume at the annual Halloween Recital (click on the link to view a video from last year’s recital). It is a blast! And a slightly more traditional Spring Recital (click on the link to view a photos from last year’s recital) takes place in late May or early June. Recitals motivate students to practice and polish their favorite music to share with family and friends!

What days and times are you available? Private piano lessons are available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9am to 6:30pm by appointment.

How many piano lessons are included each week? Lessons are typically once a week following the yearly studio calendar. Yearly tuition is based on a 9 month period (Sept-May) and does not change regardless of the number of piano lessons per month. Each semester a free bonus group class is included as part of the semester’s tuition. Summer session is billed separately, and is required if continuing in the fall.

What if we need to miss a piano lesson? Bonus group classes are scheduled during the year to account for the occasional times students miss a piano lesson or, very rarely, the instructor. Samara Rice Music also offers a unique calendar system for up to three (3) private piano lesson reschedules a semester pending availability. More information about piano lesson reschedules is available on the policies page. Tuition is based on enrollment, not attendance. Your tuition reserves your lesson day and time along with studio benefits.

Where are you located? Samara Rice Music is located in Huntington Beach, CA. The main cross streets are Warner and Bolsa Chica.

How can I pay for piano lessons? There are several options for piano lesson payment. Full Semester by credit card paid via online invoice (Sept-Dec, Jan-May),  auto-pay recurring credit card payments, or charter school funds.

Do you accept charter funds for piano lessons? Samara Rice Music is an approved vendor for the follow independent study charter school programs:

Please submit monthly purchase orders for the entire semester (Fall: Sept-Dec and Spring: Jan-May) at least two weeks before the semester begins.

Only Inspire and Sky Mountain students: please submit one purchase order for the total semester amount (Fall: Sept-Dec and Spring: Jan-May) at least two weeks before the semester begins

What if we need to discontinue piano lessons or take a break? Every student stops taking lessons at some point. Please make this decision thoughtfully with plenty of discussion between the teacher, parent, and student so that lessons can conclude with a positive sense of closure. Because tuition includes much more than the reserved lesson time the studio requires a one-month written and paid notice before the semester ends. The student must finish the remainder of the semester paid in full or forego any unused lessons, as there are no refunds (i.e. Fall Semester: one month notice by Dec. 1st; Spring Semester: one month notice by May 1st). If appropriate, a parent/student teacher conference may be scheduled before the last lesson to establish if this might be a temporary setback that can be resolved.

When is tuition due? Tuition is due by the 1st of each month. Checks are payable to “Samara Rice.” There is a 3-day grace period to turn in tuition without penalty. If payment is more than 3 days late, a $15.00 per student late penalty will be added to the invoice. After the 7th of the month, an additional $1.00 per student per day will be added to the late fee. If tuition payments are late more than twice, the student will be asked to pay the full semester’s tuition in advance. There is a $35.00 fee for bounced checks. In the case of a check bouncing, payment must be paid in cash before the next lesson.

Is there a studio registration fee? A Non-Refundable $25.00 per student Studio Registration Fee is required each academic year or whenever a student begins piano lessons. The Studio Fee enables the studio to provide students with loaner music, incentives and rewards throughout the year, theory games, theory sheets, Supersonics music, and other studio licensed music.
